Broad Street has not always been
lined by night clubs, casinos and bars it was once lined by large Georgian
houses. But as the area became more and more industrialised the wealthy
moved out and their houses were converted into shops. On the second picture
of Broad Street one can just about make out a church in the background.
It was called Unitarian Church of the Messiah, it was built in 1865 but
was demolished in 1978 in the city's "modernisation" drive. Originally
Broad
Street was called Halesowen Lane then it was re-named
Islington Street and finally only named Broad Street in the nineteenth century.
From the time the church was knocked down in Birmingham's modernisation
drive from the 1970s onwards Broad street has seen the development of many
new buildings including; The International Convention
Centre, Brindley Place the Repertory Theatre,
Alpha Tower, The Hyatt Hotel and the Hotel
